After spending four months on the free agent market, a former Vancouver Canucks defenseman has finally found his home for the season.
The New York Islanders have announced that they have signed former Canucks defenseman Ben Hutton to a one-year contract for the remainder of the 2026-27 campaign.
Hutton landing this contract for the season comes just a few days after he signed a professional tryout (PTO) agreement with the Islanders. Clearly, the Islanders liked what they saw from the former Canucks defenseman during his PTO, as they have now signed him to a contract for the campaign.
Hutton spent this past season with the Vegas Golden Knights. In 55 games with the Golden Knights in 2025-26, he posted six goals, nine assists, 15 points, and a plus-2 rating.
Looking back at Hutton's time with the Canucks
Hutton was selected by the Canucks in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, 147th overall.
From there, Hutton spent each of his first four NHL seasons with the Canucks from 2015-16 to 2018-19. In 276 games over that span with Vancouver, he posted 11 goals, 59 assists, 70 points, and 376 blocks.
Hutton's best season with the Canucks was his rookie year in 2015-16, as he posted a career-high 25 points in 75 games. He also recorded at least 19 points in three out of his four seasons with the Canucks.
Hutton was well-respected player during his time with the Canucks, and he should be a nice veteran pickup for the Islanders now that he has officially been signed for the season.
