A former Vancouver Canucks forward has been placed on the waiver wire.

This is because former Canucks forward Danton Heinen has been waived by the Columbus Blue Jackets, as reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

With Heinen being placed on waivers, the rest of the NHL now has the chance to put in a claim for him if they wish to.

In 10 games this season with the Blue Jackets, the former Canucks forward has recorded zero points and a minus-2 rating.

Looking back at Heinen's time with the Canucks

During the 2024 NHL offseason, the Canucks were looking to upgrade their top nine. Because of this, Vancouver signed Heinen to a two-year, $4.5 million contract on the first day of NHL free agency.

The Canucks signing Heinen to this multi-year deal was understandable at the time. He was just coming off a strong season with the Boston Bruins in 2023-24. In 74 games with the Bruins that campaign, he posted 17 goals, 19 assists, 36 points, and a plus-16 rating.

Given the numbers that Heinen put together with Boston the season before, the Canucks expected Heinen to provide them with some much-needed secondary scoring. However, he was unable to replicate this kind of production for the Canucks.

Heinen noticeably struggled after signing with the Canucks. In 51 games with Vancouver during the 2024-25 season, he posted just six goals and 18 points. He was unable to find his fit with the Canucks, and that led to his time in Vancouver being incredibly short.

This is because the Canucks traded Heinen with a 2025 first-round pick, defenseman Vincent Desharnais, and prospect Melvin Fernstrom to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Drew O'Connor and defenseman Marcus Pettersson in January of that same season.

With this, the Heinen signing ended up being a poor one for Vancouver. He was simply never able to get going with the Canucks.
