There has been so much talk about Simon Edvinsson’s potential destinations this season. Unsurprisingly, the Vancouver Canucks have not come up among the possible suitors.
You can’t blame the establishment for not really linking the 23-year-old blueliner to Vancouver.
The prevailing thought is that Edvinsson makes sense for a contending team, not one just starting out a rebuild.
In fact, the Canucks are in a position right now where they need to start shedding veteran pieces that don’t fit the organizational ethos at this point.
But then again, that’s exactly why Vancouver should target Edvinsson.
The Canucks can offer numerous veteran pieces, ones that can help Detroit now, instead of the futures-based package that just about every team has come up with.
One name that jumps to mind is Jake DeBrusk. The winger has been adamant about not wanting to be part of a rebuild. And while Detroit would technically be another rebuild, the situation is much further along than in Vancouver.
Likewise, usual trade candidates like Elias Pettersson, Drew O’Connor, and even Brock Boeser could be enticing pieces.
All of that woul++d make sense if Edvinsson were willing to be a part of turning an organization around that clearly has a long road ahead of it. If he’s not keen on being part of something like the project brewing in Vancouver, then a trade push to the Canucks might be a fool’s errand.
Filip Hronek might just be the piece to bring in Edvinsson
One of the things that the Red Wings have been adamant about is getting help now. They view themselves as potential playoff candidates, and, well, they need all the help they can get.
So, why not consider an old face?
In 2023, the Canucks got Filip Hronek from the Red Wings. It was the typical case of selling off a player with a potential contract situation. And that was something Detroit wanted to avoid.
But things have changed quite a bit since that deal. And potentially sending Hronek back to Detroit might be something that could benefit both sides.
The Canucks could get out from under the contract the Red Wings did not want to deal with, while getting back Edvinsson.
Hronek would actually make plenty of sense for the Red Wings at this point, while Edvinsson would be a much better long-term fit.
Heck, even Pettersson and Hronek would enable the Red Wings to move on from Dylan Larkin much more easily than they already have.
This idea is pretty much speculation at this point. There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of probability backing this up.
But if it does even have a remote chance of working, it might just be a great answer to each organization’s problems.
