It looks like the Vancouver Canucks have found their new General Manager.

On Tuesday evening, it was reported by TSN Insider Darren Dreger that Patrik Allvin is set to become the next GM of the Canucks.

Fellow TSN insider Pierre Lebrun reported that Allvin was one of the final five candidates for the Canucks GM job on Tuesday afternoon. The other candidates were Mathieu Darche, Scott Mellanby, Sean Burke and one that is unnamed. Allvin was also reported to be front runner for the Canucks GM job.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reported that Canucks President of Hockey Operations and Interim

GM Jim Rutherford has begun telling the other candidates that they did not get the job.

As for an announcement, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that an announcement should come on Wednesday.

Allvin will become the first Swedish GM in NHL history and the second European GM in NHL history after Jarmo Kekäläinen was hired as GM of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2013.

Allvin never played in the NHL but he played pro hockey from 1988 to 2002. His career began with Leksands IF in his native Sweden. Allvin was a defenceman in his career and he also played for Mora, Bodens, Vita Hasten and Arvika in Sweden. He played 20 games in Norway for Sparta Sarpsborg in the 2000-01 season. Allvin also played in North America from 1995 to 1997. He suited up for the Atlanta Knights and Quebec Rafales of the International Hockey League, (which is now defunct.) and the Nashville Knights and Pensacola Ice Pilots of the ECHL.

After his playing days were over, Allvin became a European Scout for the Montreal Canadiens from 2002-2006. He then joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as a European Scout. In 2012, he was promoted to Director of European Scouting and in 2017, was promoted to Director of Amateur Scouting.

Allvin was promoted to Assistant GM on November 4, 2020. In January 2021, he was named Interim GM for the Penguins last season when Rutherford stepped down due to “personal reasons.” A few weeks later, the Penguins hired Ron Hextall as their GM and Allvin went back to being an Assistant GM.

Allvin will become the 12th GM in Canucks history.
