The Vancouver Canucks will do something on Thursday night that they haven’t done since October 23rd – play a hockey game outside of Rogers Arena. After an unsuccessful 2-4-1 homestand, the Canucks head to Ball Arena in Denver to take on the Colorado Avalanche (4-5-1), hoping their road performance will help offset their recent struggles.

In their last outing, Vancouver capped off their seven-game homestand with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Anaheim Ducks. This was another disappointing defeat for the team, who once again let the game slip through their grasp.

After playing 13 games thus far in the regular season, the Canucks have a record of 5-6-2 (12 points), and currently sit seventh in the Pacific Division.

The opponents, on the other hand, have been a perennial regular season powerhouse in the NHL for the last few years. However, despite their immense talent led by stars such as Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, and Cale Makar, Colorado has started this season slow, only mustering a record of 4-5-1 through their first ten games.

They will also be without the services of MacKinnon, who has been sidelined with a lower-body injury for the next three weeks. Makar is close to joining the team, but is still questionable for Thursday night.

The Avalanche have been vulnerable defensively this year, giving up the second most goals per game in the NHL, sitting at an average mark of 3.6 goals conceded every night. Vancouver should be looking to exploit Colorado’s defensive lapses in order to get their offence corrected. The Canucks currently sit 24th in the NHL in goal scoring.

After Jaroslav Halak got the nod for the Canucks on Tuesday, expect Thatcher Demko to reclaim his crease, rivalling Avalanche goaltender Darcy Kuemper.

Avalanche vs. Canucks Prediction:

The Canucks have established themselves as supremely inconsistent thus far this season. No one has any idea which version of the Canucks will show up each night, and your guess is as good as ours. One thing that has been consistent is Vancouver’s ability to play close, tight-knit games, so don’t be surprised if that trend continues on Thursday.

Yes, Colorado is down Makar and MacKinnon, but they still have enough talent in order to get the job done. However, due to their struggles and subsequent loss of key players, the Canucks should keep the game close and cover the puckline at +1.5.

Pick: Canucks Puckline +1.5 at -150
