The Vancouver Canucks announced on Saturday that they have signed centre Jason Dickinson to a three-year contract worth 2.65 million dollars per season. That is a total of 7.95 million dollars for three years.
Dickinson was traded to the Canucks from the Dallas Stars in exchange for a third round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft on July 17th. He was a pending restricted free agent.
Dickinson filed for arbitration on August 1st with a hearing date scheduled for August 20th.
“Jason was an important addition for our forward group this summer and we’re pleased to have agreed to terms with him on a three-year deal,” said Canucks general manager Jim Benning. “He’s a versatile player that can play on both the wing and at centre, and is also a strong penalty killer.”
Thomas Drance of The Athletic broke down the details of Dickinson’s contract and confirmed that there is no trade protection.
Dickinson was originally drafted by the Stars in the first round of the 2013 draft at 29th overall. In 221 career NHL games, Dickinson scored 25 goals and tallied 38 assists for 63 points. Last season, he scored seven goals and tallied eight assists for 15 points in 51 games.
With the Stars, Dickinson has built a reputation for being a solid defensive centre and his ability to play on the wing led him to some ice time in the Stars top six.
With Vancouver, it is expected that Dickinson will be the Canucks third line centre and he will be responsible on the defensive side and help out on the penalty kill. While he does not provide a lot of offence, he does score goals every now and then.
Now the Canucks have to focus on new contracts for Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes.
