General manager Jim Benning has signed forward Zack MacEwen to a new multi-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks.

Getting down to the wire and the general manager of the Vancouver Canucks, Jim Benning has finally made his first official move. It’s all said and done now, just three days before the market opens for free agents and Zack MacEwen has inked a new multi-year contract with the Canucks.

According to TSN insider Rick Dhaliwal, the “Big Fella” has come to terms with Benning and he happily signed a two-year deal with an annual payment of a very friendly $825,000 dollars. Talk about a good contract for both sides here!

MacEwen gets stability and security to play in the NHL with a one-way deal and at the same time Benning was able to lock in a solid player at a really good price. He’s somebody who works very hard and has seen vast improvement every step of the way after going undrafted. I would have thought a multi-year deal would have meant at least a $1 million dollar figure, but it appears both sides were very happy to get a deal done.

MacEwen is a player who brings a lot of different talents to the lineup. For starters, he’s somebody who can play up and down the lineup. He’s a good fit anywhere you put him, but for the most part, he’ll be used as a player who can bring energy and toughness to the bottom-six. If Travis Green needs him to play up the line up in a pinch, he can do that too.

He played 17 games for the Canucks this year and definitely began to feel like a permanent roster player towards the end of the season. He racked up five goals and added one assist by the time the regular season was put on pause due to the pandemic. It was too bad that happened because just before it did, MacEwen had a career game when he scored two goals versus the Colorado Avalanche on March 6th to help push the Canucks to victory.

This guy has what it takes to step up and be an impact player. He’s a right-winger in the NHL but he’s got the chops to slide in at center if needed. He’ll be a great player to have involved as he’ll help push the compete level between teammates. Healthy competition is always good and I believe the best is yet to come.
