Vancouver Canucks rookie defenceman Quinn Hughes has been named to the 2020 NHL All-Star Game in St. Louis.

The Vancouver Canucks will enjoy more rookie magic at All-Star Weekend.

On Saturday, the NHL announced that rookie blueliner Quinn Hughes has been selected to represent Team Pacific for the 2020 NHL All-Star Game in St. Louis, Missouri. Hughes has four goals and 31 points this season.

This marks the third straight year where a first-year Canuck will be at the showdown between the NHL’s best. It was also noted that Hughes is the 11th Vancouver blueliner to be selected to an All-Star Game, and he’s only the second since the 2005-06 lockout.

Drafted seventh overall by the Canucks in 2018, Hughes has quickly emerged as the face of Vancouver’s blue line. He was a late call-up near the end of last season, recording three assists in five games.

As of Saturday afternoon, Vancouver held the league’s fifth-best power play at 24.7 percent. Hughes has been a key reason for that success, with three goals and 13 helpers on the power play this season.

Hughes is in the running for the Calder Trophy, though Colorado Avalanche blueliner Cale Makar has been slightly more productive with nine goals and 33 points on the season. At the very least, Hughes should earn a nomination for the award.

Last year, the Canucks sent rookie Elias Pettersson to the All-Star Game in San Jose, California. Pettersson went on to win the Calder Trophy after tallying 28 goals and 66 points. This came a year after Brock Boeser reached the All-Star Game in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Boeser was named All-Star Game MVP in 2018 after leading Team Pacific to a 5-2 victory over Team Atlantic in the finals. Boeser went on to receive a Calder Trophy nomination, losing to New York Islanders star Mathew Barzal.

Now, it’s Hughes’ turn to shine on the grand stage. He’ll be accompanied by teammates Pettersson and goalie Jacob Markstrom, along with the likes of scoring leader Connor McDavid, and reigning Norris Trophy winner Mark Giordano. We’ll see if the trio of Canucks can lead Team Pacific to another All-Star weekend victory.
