Canucks news: Luongo’s new job, Sutter’s injury, and recent call ups
The Vancouver Canucks had a few pieces of news arise over the last 24 hours, here’s everything you need to know.
The Vancouver Canucks‘ franchise leader in wins, Roberto Luongo, has taken a new job as a “Special Advisor to the General Manager,” working alongside Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon.
Luongo played a total of 11 seasons with the Panthers, but spent the best years of his career as a member of the Canucks for eight seasons. As per The Athletic, Luongo said part of his responsibilities could include going to see junior or college players, but his main focus right now is learning as much as possible about the management side of the game.
“Right now, I am just trying to learn everything I can about the management side of a hockey team. That means working on CBA issues, salary cap stuff, player transactions, everything like that. I want to get familiar with every aspect of management and then see which direction I think would suit me best.” -Roberto Luongo

Sutter’s Injury
Brandon Sutter, who is coming off a season where he battled a sports hernia, is now listed as day-to-day with a lower body injury. Sutter left the Canucks’ game on Tuesday night against the Predators after tweaking something. He was in visible discomfort, and was visibly frustrated as he headed down the tunnel to the Canucks’ dressing room.
Sutter is having a bit of a bounce back season, so his frustrations are definitely easy to understand. Staying healthy was the key for Sutter this season, and he felt confident that he’d be able to do just that thanks to his newfound Pilates workout.
It’s unclear at this time how long Sutter could be out, but Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy reported Wednesday that although it’s early, it sounds as though Sutter’s injury is considered mild at this point. Regardless, the Canucks made some roster moves yesterday.
The call ups
Tyler Graovac and Zack MacEwen were both called up from the Utica Comets of the AHL yesterday. Jay Beagle, who wasn’t in the lineup for Tuesday’s win over the Predators, could return to the lineup Thursday.
It would appear as though the Canucks don’t want to risk anything, however, as Graovac would most likely slot into the lineup should they be without both Beagle and Sutter for tonight’s game against the Dallas Stars.
Adam Gaudette will have ample opportunity to prove himself as a result of these injuries, but for now, it’s fingers crossed that Sutter can make a speedy recovery. The Canucks will face off against the Stars, who have been one of the best teams in the league as of late, at 7 PM.
