The Utica Comets signed third-year pro Colton Saucerman to a Pro-Tryout Contract on December 10th. Shortly after, fans all over the hockey world took notice to his Yukon Cornelius-esque beard. I sat down with Colton to ask him a few questions.

As I scrolled through my Twitter feed late Saturday night, I noticed a video of Saucerman in a Utica Comets jersey, I saw the beard, the nameplate, and said, “Is that his real name?”

Turns out it was, and as Colton Saucerman gained more and more popularity on social media, I decided I’d seize the opportunity to try and ask him a few questions. The Saucerman agreed.

Check out my interview with him below.

David: “What’s your hockey story? How’d you get started and get to the point you’re at today?”

Saucerman: Played youth hockey in Colorado Springs. Left home at 17, went to play in the USHL.  Three teams in three years and one team in the NAHL for half a year.

(USHL Des Moines, Dubuque, Lincoln) (NAHL Corpus Christi Ice Rays) then college for four years at Northeastern University. third-year pro, ECHL (South Carolina, Manchester, Idaho) AHL (Hersey, Springfield, Providence, Ontario, and Utica).

David: Awesome! Now I’m sure you get asked this all the time, but what country does your last name originate from? It’s quite the hockey player name.

Saucerman: I’m not actually sure. I know I’m Irish and Italian but I’ve never done an ancestry thing.

David: Fair enough. By any means, it’s a great last name! Now, I saw your interview with the Comets, you said it took roughly eight months for you to grow that beard. But how old were you when you could first grow facial hair?

Saucerman: I was 16 the first time I grew facial hair. Handlebar mustache for Movember haha

David: What do you like to do in your down time?

Saucerman:  I guess in my down[time] I love to play golf and cook. Favorite shows are Game of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy and Breaking bad.

David: Favourite food?

Saucerman: Steak.

David: Awesome! Final question. Are you aware that you and your beard are going viral right now? If so, how does it feel? And have you ever gotten this kind of response after joining another team?

Saucerman: Yeah it appears, I am. It’s a cool thing and I appreciate all the love and support. And my new teammates have had positive things to say about my beard. I’m sure they will razz me a little for all the attention.

David: That’s great. On behalf of Canucks fans, we’re rooting for you to make good with the Comets! Thank you for doing this!

Saucerman: Of course, my pleasure. Thank you!

Saucerman has received noticeable attention over the last couple of days, being posted all over social media. Some are saying his beard is the best in hockey, surpassing the likes of Brent Burns and Joe Thornton.

What do you think Canucks fans? Does he hold the crown for best beard in hockey?
