The Vancouver Canucks will face Detroit at home, and for the first time in 12 years Alex Burrows will not be with them.

Vancouver Canucks fans were clamoring for general manager Jim Benning to make some sort of deadline trade.

After watching players such as Ben Bishop and Martin Hanzal bring decent returns to their old teams, it was starting to looked like the Canucks had waited too long to wade into the trade market. But “Trader Jim” finally made an appearance on Monday.

Longtime Canuck Alexandre Burrows was traded to the Ottawa Senators, in exchange for prospect Jonathan Dahlen.

Benning has endured plenty of criticism for trades he has made — or not made — in the last 12 months. But this is one that garnered instantly good reviews. Dahlen is, by all accounts, a solid prospect who is putting up almost a point-per-game overseas:

A solid return, and a win for the GM.

Still, it means saying an abrupt goodbye to a fan favorite. We all knew that we were possibly seeing Burrows’ last game in a Canucks uniform on Saturday. But nothing can prepare us for seeing him leave town, and then put on another team’s uniform.

More on the Burr trade a bit later. In the meantime, the rest of the Canucks must soldier on.
