The NHL trade deadline is coming up, and Vancouver Canucks defenceman Chris Tanev still seems to be a topic.

Over the past weeks, we have covered different trade scenarios for the Vancouver Canucks that we could see as the trade deadline nears. One of those was the option of trading No. 1 defenceman Chris Tanev.

We quickly decided the Canucks aren’t in a position to trade their best D-man, but Tanev is still a media topic. Why? Because defencemen can fetch some really nice returns.

Another topic of the day is the NHL’s bye week, and the impact it seemingly has on teams.

NHL Bye Week

Ryan Biech (Canucks Army) — How Teams Are Impacted by the NHL Bye Week

"The NHL added a new wrinkle to the schedule this season with the league mandated bye week. Each team gets one, granting the players respite from the rigours of an 82 game season if ever so briefly. The NHLPA secured the vacation time in exchange for agreeing to the three-on-three format in the NHL All-Star Game. With five teams coming off their bye week this past weekend, the combined record is now 4-12-4. Teams playing in the first game out of their bye week are outscored 39-68 in their first game back."

From a player perspective, a bye week is great. It is actually just five off-days, not a whole week, which shows how tough the NHL’s 82-game schedule really is. We all need a few days off work every once in a while.

But, a few days off can obviously have an impact on game results. Without empirical data, it is hard to predict whether that impact would be negative or positive, so Canucks Army’s Ryan Biech investigated this season’s results.

As it seems, the impact is mostly negative. Teams coming off of their bye weeks seem to play much worse, recording shot and goal rates below the league average.

I’m not sure what that tells us for the future. Depending on further results and analysis, the NHL might need to adjust the schedule so each team plays an equal amount of games against teams coming off of their bye weeks.

However, I am glad the bye week exists. Not because it gives me a few extra days without Canucks hockey, but because the players deserve a break. No matter what the next game result turns out to be.

Trading Tanev

Will Graham (Vancouver Courier) — What is Chris Tanev Worth at the Deadline?

"It’s a bye week, so suddenly I’ve had time to think about things other than the playoff race and the ongoing travails of Megnagate. I’m admittedly pretty weary of trade deadline speculation. So instead, how about some pseudo trade deadline speculation? In addition to Jannik Hansen and Alex Burrows, Vancouver has been rumoured to be shopping a defenceman for a forward, possibly Ben Hutton. But what if the Canucks decided to go bigger?"

Yeah, what if the Canucks decided to go bigger?

Will Graham listed some defencemen that have been traded in the past, along with the returns they fetched. Most notable is of course Adam Larsson, who was traded by the New Jersey Devils to the Edmonton Oilers last summer, bringing Taylor Hall to the East Coast.

So, what if Tanev (plus X) could make Matt Duchene a Canuck? Would that make sense?

I’m going to say no.
