Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis made his weekly appearance on the TEAM 1040 and spoke on the 48-hour window the general managers had to speak to locked out players, whether he thinks Cory Schneider should go to Europe, and the injury status of Ryan Kesler, Jason Garrison, and Alex Edler.

Gillis also chimed in on the fledgling Canadian Hockey League Players’ Association.

» Says he did not take advantage of the 48 hour window. Citing his past as a player agent, he felt it would be more damaging than helpful because the organization has a very good relationship with the players. Felt it would be a waste of time and energy.

» Cory Schneider could benefit from going to Europe or not. Goaltending such a different position, but feels Schneider will make the decision that is best for him.

» Ryan Kesler, Jason Garrison, and Alex Edler are all making progress and the next few days are important because they will be ramping their training up. Optimistic they will be fine when the CBA situation gets resolved.

» If any of the three are cleared to play, they will have no longer have access to Canucks staff and facilities.

» In regards to a CHLPA, he feels there is no need for it. Feels teen-aged players have short attention spans and could be taken advantage of if not done correctly.

There’s a reason why the media and hockey players alike refer to this time period in the NHL as “the stretch drive”. In an 82 game schedule, any of the 30 NHL teams are bound to have one or two forgettable match-ups. The past two home games for the Vancouver Canucks have been just that, with disappointing games versus Buffalo and Dallas. Their 5-2 loss to the Stars was their first back-to-back regulation losses since early November. Considering that the Canucks were playing hockey until mid-June last season, it’s conceivable that this hockey club is starting to show some wear. (more…)

All indications thus far from General Manager Mike Gillis point in this direction. Several times during Cory Schneider’s hot run, Gillis was asked if they were going to move their back-up goaltender. Several pundits vocalized that the Canucks needed to make a move, to bring in another piece, possibly on one of the wings, or a top four defenseman. While the addition of one the afore-mentioned pieces might make the lineup look more complete, I assure you, it would hurt the teams’ depth. (more…)
