#3 D | 6’1″, 198 lbs. | Age: 34

Bieksa is the Canucks go-to player for that Canadian style, in-your-face grit and leadership on a nightly basis.  On most nights he brings it with sound positional play and the occasional “Gordie Howe” hattrick, but he has nights when he looks lost on the ice as well.  His play is always noticeable on the ice whether for mishaps or the more usual big defensive play or timely goal.  Well liked, and well respected, Bieksa is about as unmovable a Canuck you’ll find on this roster.  As he ages, the Canucks will have to find him younger, more durable players to surround him with, as he is prone to injuries nowadays.

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Dan Hamhuis could be joining Team Canada at the 2013 IIHF World Championships in Sweden and Finland.

Former Canucks head coach (and now an analyst with TSN and head coach of the ZSC Lions of the Swiss League) Marc Crawford tweeted on Wednesday that Team Canada was looking to add a defenceman to the roster.

According to Hamhuis, he has contacted Hockey Canada to alert them that he is available, but hasn’t heard back yet.

The Team Canada defence currently consists of Stephane Robidas, Brenden Dillon, T.J. Brodie, Justin Schultz, Luke Schenn, Jay Harrison, and Brian Campbell.

Hamhuis previously represented Canada at the World Championships in 2007, 2008, and 2009. He also has experience playing the World Junior Championships in 2001 and 2002.

The Vancouver Canucks presented its team awards prior to Thursday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks.

Captain Henrik Sedin took home the Cyrus H. McLean Trophy as the team’s leading scorer through 46 games played. The Three Star Award, which is awarded to the player with the most three star selections, will be determined after Saturday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.

The rest of the winners were determined by fan voting held on Canucks.com.

Winger Jannik Hansen took home the award for Most Exciting Player and ‘unsung hero’. Dan Hamhuis was voted the team’s best defenceman and goaltender Cory Schneider was deemed the  ’most valuable player’.

Ballots for the NHL Awards have been sent out to members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) and winners will be announced at the end of the season at the league’s annual awards gala. The date and venue have yet to be announced.

It was reported back in February that the awards won’t be held in Las Vegas this year because of the shortened season. The awards have been held in ‘Sin City’ since 2009.
