Ryan Stanton is Second in Scoring Amongst Vancouver Canucks Defencemen

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Ryan Stanton is now the team’s second-highest scoring defenceman.

Stanton had a big night on Friday picking up three assists in a 6-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. His night didn’t start off particularly well though.

He was caught making a bad pinch and winger Zack Kassian didn’t do a good job play defence 2:42 into the first period. That lead to Blue Jackets winger Matt Calvert‘s opening goal.

It was the Canucks the rest of the way and Stanton made amends for his gaffe.

Stanton assisted on Zack Kassian‘s 2-1 goal on a routine clear in the defensive zone. Then he assisted on Henrik Sedin‘s 5-1 goal in the third period.

Undeterred by his first period blunder, he made an aggressive pinch all the way to the goal line before dishing the puck back to Daniel Sedin at the blueline. Daniel fired a slapshot on goal and it was deflected by Henrik in the slot past Sergei Bobrovsky.

He capped off the night by sending a beautiful slapshot on goal that was deflected by Jeremy Welsh in front of the goal past Bobrovsky with just under 30 seconds to go. It was Welsh’s first career NHL goal.

The three points vaulted Stanton past Jason Garrison and Alexander Edler for second on the team behind Kevin Bieksa. He is on pace for three goals and 34 points this season.

Pretty good for a waiver wire pickup that is averaging 13:55 a night.
