The 25 year old defenceman cleared waivers on Tuesday morning and was officially assigned to the Comets so they could activate winger Dale Weise off injured reserve.
Needless to say, it is likely Weber is exploring his options in Europe before deciding whether to report or not.
A report from Switzerland suggests National League A teams might have interest. They suggest if Weber reports to the AHL, it could hurt his chances of making the Swiss national team for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The Canucks could be exploring their trade options as well. Even though Weber cleared waivers, it doesn’t mean there is no interest in him.
He is making a cheap $650,000 this season and is a decent depth defenceman.
Teams likely just didn’t see or think of Weber highly enough enough to warrant using one of their 50 allowed contracts to add him. A one-for-one trade with another team for another ‘unwanted’ player is a possibility.
