Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo will debut a new mask when they start the 2013-14 NHL regular season on Thursday against the San Jose Sharks.
He showed off the mask to Canucks TV’s Joey Kenward on Sunday after practice.
“I prefer simpler masks, so I just pretty much took the patch that we wear on our shoulders [on our third jerseys] and transplanted it straight onto the mask,” said Luongo explaining the concept of the mask.
The new one is a return to the Johnny Canuck-inspired masks he has had for most of his tenure as a Canuck.
“I wanted to go back with the Johnny Canuck theme that I had from a few years ago. Hopefully it carries over bit of that luck we had when we went to the Cup final.”
Many goaltenders around the league have elaborately designed masks, but Luongo says he prefers to keep it simple.
“I don’t like when there’s too much stuff going on because you can’t really tell sometimes what’s on the mask. It’s tough to see from far away so I rather keep it simple then everybody can see what’s going on. But at the same time try to keep it nice.”
Of note: the mask is CCM-branded as opposed to Reebok-branded like his previous masks.
