Vancouver Canucks Place Three On Waivers, Send Down Lain

Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

Another day and another day of cuts for the Vancouver Canucks.

Defencemen Patrick Mullen and Yann Sauve as well as forward Benn Ferriero were placed on waivers by the Canucks for the purpose of assignment to the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League.

Centre Kellan Lain was assigned to the Comets and will play in tonight’s preseason game between the Comets and the Abbotsford Heat at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.

Neither Mullen and Sauve were expected to challenge for a spot in the Canucks opening lineup, but Ferriero and Lain were.

Ferriero, a veteran of 96 NHL games, failed to draw into the lineup for a single game during the preseason. He was penciled by many to be a challenger for the 13th forward position. With his demotion, Ferriero is projected serve as the Comets’ first line centre.

Lain was the prized free agent coup by the Canucks from the NCAA last March. At 24 years old and 6’6″, 210 pounds, he was physically ready to challenge for a spot in the NHL, but failed to show the edge and faceoff ability expected from him.

Following the this round of cuts, the Canucks preaseason roster is now at three goaltenders, 10 defencemen, and 19 forwards.
