It appears Vancouver Canucks goaltender Eddie Lack will be the backup this upcoming season after the team assigned Joacim Eriksson to the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League on Saturday.
It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise Eriksson lost the backup job—although he was given a mere 20 minutes of preseason action. He looked stellar in spurts, but on goals against, Eriksson appeared slow to react. He will need seasoning in the minors to adjust to the smaller North American ice surface.
Eriksson was among seven players that were assigned to the Comets. The others were defencemen Peter Andersson, Alex Biega, Adam Polasek, and Henrik Tommernes as well as forwards Darren Archibald and Alexandre Mallet.
Following the latest round of cuts, the Canucks preaseason roster is now at three goaltenders, 12 defencemen, and 20 forwards.
The Canucks will need submit an “Opening Day Playing Roster” prior to the start of the regular season consisting of a minimum of 2 goaltenders and 18 skaters and a maximum of 23 players.
The Utica Comets open their training camp on Sunday with a preseason game against the Abbotsford Heat at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Their roster for the game (based on the cuts from Canucks camp) will be:
