The Vancouver Canucks placed defenceman Alex Biega on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League.
The 25 year old defenceman is the latest player to be cut by the Canucks. The preseason roster now sits at 41 players—four goaltenders, 15 defencemen, and 22 forwards.
NHL teams are required to submit an “Opening Day Playing Roster” prior to the start of the regular season consisting of a minimum of 2 goaltenders and 18 skaters and a maximum of 23 players.
The Utica Comets open their training camp on Sunday with a preseason game against the Abbotsford Heat at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.
The Canucks have assigned one goaltender, two defencemen (assuming Biega clears waivers), and 11 forwards to the Comets thus far. They will need at least one more goaltender, four defencemen, and another forward for their preseason game.
Expect goaltender Joe Cannata to be assigned to the Comets on Saturday possibly along with defencemen Adam Polasek, Yann Sauve, Jeremie Blain, and Patrick Mullen as well as left winger Steven Anthony.
