Vancouver Canucks AHL Team Relocation to Utica, New York Approved: Report

The American Hockey League Board of Governors have approved the relocation of the Vancouver Canucks-owned Peoria Rivermen franchise to Utica, New York for the upcoming season, according to reports.

The governors voted on the move this morning at 8:30am PDT and a press conference has been announced for 9am PDT in Utica on Friday.

Details of the agreement were not immediately available, but it is expected to contain a clause that guarantees the Canucks a break-even operation. It is also expected to include an out-clause that will allow the Canucks to move the team to a more desirable location like Abbotsford.

The Board of Governors vote was nothing more than formality and it was unlikely they would have voted ‘no’. It was clear they wanted the Canucks to find a home for their farm team after they granted them a 30-day extension last month.

It would not have benefited any AHL or NHL team if the Canucks were forced to suspend the operations of their team. It would have created an unbalanced schedule and division alignment. Teams would have had to accept Canucks prospects, which would have affected the playing time of their own players and prospects.
