The Vancouver Canucks have placed left winger David Booth on long-term injured reserve in preparation for Wednesday’s trade deadline, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

The move will allow the Canucks to spend up to $4.25 million over the NHL salary cap. Capgeek.com estimates the Canucks currently have enough space on deadline day to acquire just over $6.1 million in annual cap hits.

The Canucks will be looking to add a centre at the deadline. They are rumoured to be interested in Dallas Stars centre Derek Roy and Buffalo Sabres centre Steve Ott.

Booth is slated to miss the rest of the regular season, but there is a small chance he could return before the playoffs. The Canucks would have to clear the required cap space for Booth to return in the regular season.
