The Vancouver Canucks farm team will be in Abbotsford beginning next season, according to a report from the Sport Market’s Tom Mayenknecht.
Mayenknecht reports the Calgary Flames will move the Abbotsford Heat (which they own) to Utica, New York for the 2013-14 season. The Canucks will purchase the Peoria Rivermen franchise, which is owned by the St. Louis Blues, and move it to Abbotsford. The Blues would then sign an affiliation agreement with the Chicago Wolves.
The rumours of the Heat moving to Utica surfaced last month after a report appeared in the Utica Observer-Dispatch saying the city had reached a ten-year deal with the Flames for relocation. The Flames denied a deal was made and said they were “under contract and committed” to the city of Abbotsford.
The Canucks, at the time, said they were in discussions with the Wolves to renew their affiliation agreement, but were also exploring other options. They are in the final year of a two-year affiliation agreement that was signed with the Wolves back in the summer of 2011.
