The Vancouver Canucks have signed free agent defenceman Cam Barker to a one-year contract worth $700,000 pro-rated.
Barker was originally slated to attend training camp on a professional tryout, but interest from other teams likely forced the Canucks hands. His agent, J.P. Barry told News 1130 last week that the Canucks were only one of the teams interested in his client and there was other interest.
Free agent defenceman Jim Vandermeer expressed interest in joining the Canucks in Novmeber feeling his toughness would be a fit. The Canucks spoke with Vandermeer’s agent prior to the lockout and then again last Tuesday, but no tryout or contract offer was made.
Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault told the media on Friday that he wanted more of a puck-moving defenceman.

Barker is a natural left-side defenceman, but has played the right in spurts. For the jersey number aficionados, Barker wore #13 with the Edmonton Oilers and #25 with the Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks. Number 25 is not taken on the team while number 13 has been taken by Steve Pinizzotto.
