Canucks Forward Mason Raymond Signs in Europe

Vancouver Canucks left winger Mason Raymond has signed a 11-game contract with Örebro HK of HockeyAllsvenskan, the second-highest level of play in Sweden.

It was reported earlier this month that Raymond’s agent, J.P. Barry, had been fielding calls from interested in European clubs, but Raymond had not made decision about playing overseas. Örebro were one of the clubs that expressed interest.

Raymond will make his debut on January 3, 2013 against Mora IK and he is expected to play alongside former NHLer Jared Aulin. The last game of his contract will be February 2 against Almtuna IS at the earliest.

Interestingly, the last batch of NHL games cancelled were up to January 14 and it is widely assumed the league and its Players’ Association will hammer out a deal in the next week or so to save the 2013 season. Gary Bettman has said at minimum a 48-game schedule must be played and when that is not possible, the season will be cancelled. Any cancellations beyond the 14th would make it difficult for a 48-game season.
