Team History Series: Florida Panthers

I have always said, I am nothing if I do not explore all teams eventhough the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Vancouver Canucks are my two teams.  I am Editor for The Canuck Way, and Staff Writer for Bolts By The Bay.  I do also own a Florida Panthers jersey.  Yes, I am a fan…  hey, don’t throw things at me because I like the team that plays in “The Litter Box”.

The Florida Panthers were born in 1993.  They call the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida their home.  The team has never changed their name, and were once owned by Blockbuster Entertainment mogul, H. Wayne Huizenga.  Before the BankAtlantic Center being home the team played in the same home as the Miami Heat…  the Miami Arena.

The San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League (AHL), and the Cincinnati Cyclones of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) are the minor league affiliates.

Cliff Viner, Chairman of Sunrise Sports and Entertainment own the team.  The “C” is currently vacant, while Kevin Dineen is Head Coach, and Dale Tallon (former GM of the Chicago Blackhawks) is the General Manager.

The team plays in the Eastern Conference, Southeast Division of the National Hockey League (NHL), and won one conference championship back in 1996.  The team has its’ ups and downs, but in 2012 they won the Southeast Division title.  The team is still pursuing their 1st ever Stanley Cup and President’s Trophy.

To add insult to injury… the 1st win came at the expense of the Tampa Bay Lightning (which was a 2-0 shutout).

MEOW!!!  :)
