Another season has come to an end and another Stanley Cup has been handed to a team not named the Vancouver Canucks. With the LA Kings win last night, the Canucks are finding the Cupless Club getting smaller and smaller. It took the LA Kings 45 years to finally bring home the Cup, how much longer until the will the Canucks wait? Will the team finally lift the Stanley Cup in 3 years?
In their 42 years of existence, the Vancouver Canucks have seen the Stanley Cup Finals three times: 1981-1982 against the New York Islanders where they were swept in 4 games, 1993-1994 against the New York Rangers where they took it to Game 7, and another Game 7 push in 2010-2011 against the Boston Bruins.
Each time the team came up short after battling through the rounds to reach the Finals, and each time the lack of Stanley Cup in Canucks history left a bitter taste in the fans mouth. Is there a conspiracy against the team? A curse? Just a string of bad luck? And some might chalk it up to the first two, but take a look a the teams left with out a Cup:
- St. Louis Blues
- Buffalo Sabres
- Minnesota Wild
- Washington Capitals
- San Jose Sharks
- Florida Panthers
- Phoenix Coyotes
- Nashville Predators
- Columbus Blue Jackets
- Ottawa Senators
- Winnipeg Jets
Looking at this list, you might think that the Canucks are in good company but really it’s not a pretty sight. Jets, Senators, Blue Jackets, Predators, Coyotes, Panthers, Wild and Sharks are all less than 25 seasons old. That leaves the Capitals (class of ’74), Blues (class of ’67), and Sabres (class of ’70, like the Canucks) without a Cup. The last of the old guard and the LA Kings were part of this grouping until last night.
If nothing else, the Canucks and their fans should take the early knock out as a sign from other teams: they aren’t just going to hand you the Cup, what works in the season will not cut it in the post season, and just because you’re the 1st seed doesn’t grant you immunity from the 8th seed.
Whether the Cup arrives in Vancouver’s hands in 2015 or in another 43 years from now, the team, the tradition, and the heart will have pushed the team to their victory.
Here’s hoping the Cupless Club membership runs out for the Vancouver Canucks soon.
