It’s official – it’s going to be a ‘real’ western team in the 2011 Stanley Cup final because the two teams in the western conference final are, in fact, west coast teams ie. San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks.
The Sharks 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings tonight in California guaranteed there won’t be an eastern ‘imposter’ in the Cup final ie. Detroit, Chicago, Nashville.
Ex-Canuck Kyle Wellwood, now a Shark (7 points in playoffs and a +7) said after the Sharks win that the Canucks had “great team speed and are tough to beat when they get a two-goal lead.”
He said the Sharks would welcome a shorter flight “up the coast” for the games as opposed to flying across the continent. As for the team physical weariness after a gruelling 7-game series with the Red Wings, he said: “we’ll get a few days rest and be ready for Sunday.” Game 1 of the western conference final is Sunday afternoon 5 p.m. PDT at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.
