After a disappointing loss at home, the Canucks outlasted the L.A. Kings 2-1 with a shootout victory, backstopped by Andrew ‘Rayzor’ Raycroft.
After Roberto Luongo was diagnosed with a hairline rib fracture on Tuesday, the club called up Cory Schneider from the Manitoba Moose (he currently has the best record in the AHL) to backup Andrew Raycroft for their western road trip. Canucks fans were delighted to learn that, despite a lengthy wait behind Luongo (who had started every game thus far this season), Raycroft showed no signs of rust whatsoever.
All of the regulation offense was generated in the first period. [...]

Wings Soar in Third Period
The Detroit Red Wings scored four goals in the third period of Tuesday nights match versus the Vancouver Canucks en route to a 5-4 victory.
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, courtesy of a couple of soft-ish goals on Chris Osgood, the Canucks couldn’t find a way to put away the boys in white and red. Heaven knows they tried, as Ryan Kesler and Mason Raymond both had dangerous chances to make it 3-1, but backup Jimmy Howard (drafted by Detroit 2/64 in 2003) played exceptional in relief of Osgood.
Howard finished the night stopping 20 of 22 shots, earning his [...]
Captain, ‘O’ My Captain
With a 2-0 win over the visiting Edmonton Oilers Sunday night, captain Roberto Luongo etched his mark on Canuck history.
The 6′3, 205 lb Montreal, Quebec native made Canuck history this past summer, signing a 12 year, $64 M contract. He went right back to the record book, after posting his 21st shutout as a Vancouver Canuck, passing ‘Captain’ Kirk McLean as the franchise leader. “It’s not the most important thing that I have in mind, but we’ll take it and work toward better things in the future,” said Luongo.
Luongo made 27 saves, and moved into a third place tie on [...]
Ray of Light
In an early CBC HNIC edition, the Vancouver Canucks iced a 3-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at General Motors Place Saturday, October 24, 2009.
Special teams factored largely into in the game, which featured a number of early momentum swings as the clubs swapped odd man advantages.
The Canucks capitalized early with the man advantage, as Mason Raymond and Ryan Kesler both posted powerplay tallies. Raymond’s goal would be reviewed, as the Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson felt Michael Grabner knocked the puck down with a high stick, but it stood.

Heart Act to Follow
With their first successful road attempt in five games, the Vancouver Canucks exorcised some demons Wednesday night in Chicago.
The scene was the United Center in Chicago Illinois, the last place the Canucks would play hockey during the 2008-09 season (in May). Many eyes have been on Roberto Luongo during the day, wondering how he would perform following an emotion filled loss in game 6 of the second round of the playoffs. The media caught footage of Roberto showing up early to the United Center, watching BlackHawk players practicing and shooting. The results of such preparation couldn’t have been more satisfying.

Half a Second Too Late
Despite a late flurry by the Vancouver Canucks in the third period, the Edmonton Oilers won for the 5th time in 7 games against them at home.
It was a game that had a little bit of everything, with some late drama to put an exclamation mark on a game that didn’t feature a lot of scoring. Ales Hemsky almost had a clean shot at a vacated Vancouver net (for the extra attacker) before a diving Alex Edler cleanly checked him off the puck. Edler made contact with the puck first, but his poke toppled Hemsky and moved the play back [...]
Battle of the Basement Dwellers
For years since their inception into the National Hockey League, the Minnesota Wild have stifled the Vancouver Canucks with trapping, defensive minded hockey. Last night, the roles were somewhat reversed.
To begin with, let’s evaluate the game for what it really boiled down to: Goaltending. Niklas Backstrom, named the games’ Crown Royal 1st star by CBC, stopped 37 of 39 shots, for a .949 SV%. At the other end, with half the workload, Roberto Luongo earned his 3rd home win of the season, stopping 17 of 18 shots, for a .944 SV%. Backstrom made a huge stop [...]
